Hauling methods

Hauling shaft

A hauling shaft is required to properly control the pulk is needed on uneven and steep ground, and must accommodate the stresses and strains imposed on the system.

The design incorporates several plastic components (rated to below - 40C and UV inhibited), to allow stresses to be distributed around the shaft. The black acetyl T-brackets allow the cross- and side-tubes to twist with respect to one another.

The Snowsled rigid shaft

  • is unrestricted in the vertical plane, and folds back over the pulk for easy storage
  • maintains maximum stability horizontally
  • allows significant twisting, and
  • can be packed easily within the pulk for shipping.

Ropes

Rope hauling is best when travel is mainly over fairly flat areas. Our hauling ropes are 8 mm red, braided, polypropylene (which floats) and include a heavy duty 9 mm shock cord and extension restraint loop.

The complete rope system shown weighs 340 grms (excluding harness), and includes 3 Wild Country Wild Wire karabiners (40 grms each). These are optional, but make attachment to the harness very easy, and also allow easy disconnection at the shock cord loop when stopping for rest stops, etc. They are then also available for use in climbing and rescue situations when security has to be assured. (They are not screwgates however).

Towing ropes are attached to the pulk through 10 mm holes in the top rim, as shown.
